Course description
This course is intended for researchers and professionals who are currently working with, or are planning to work with, wildlife in an experimental setting.
The course meets the standards for the species-specific education and training requirements for persons designing projects and procedures for wildlife.
Course objectives: The objective of this course is to present basic and appropriate biology, care, health and management of wildlife, recognition of pain, suffering and distress in these animals and minimally invasive procedures to be applied on these animals.

Course duration | 2 days and is given around March every year. The first course is scheduled for 25 &26 March 2024 |
Prior knowledge | MSc in a biological, biomedical or zootechnical field. We recommend to follow the basic Laboratory Animal Science course before the species-specific course. In case this is not practically feasible for each participant, we also allow starting with this species-specific course. |
Homework/ self- study | Active participation and preparation on the lectures, presentations and practical(s). |

Teaching method | Lectures and practicals à competence level and training on the job to be discussed UP FRONT by the animal welfare officer/course organiser to discuss the student assignment and determine per person what is necessary for their competence level. During the course the student will focus on the species of interest. If training is necessary on site for the students, this will not be re-imbursed. |

Practical Part: Training on the job – competence, To be performed by participants at their institute (or on another time and day, before or after the course). Certificates are awarded after both theoretical and practical parts are finished.

Cancellation condition
You may cancel free of charge up to 1 month before the start of the course. After this date you will be charged with the University fee, unless:
- You can find someone to replace you in the course and supply the course coordinator with the name and contact information of your replacement. In this case you will be charged a €50,- cancellation fee.
- You are a PhD of Wageningen University with a valid reason to cancel (illness or death in the family 1st or 2nd degree). In this case you will be charged the reduced fee and your supervisor/PI must send a mail indication the reason for cancellation.
